[isp-wireless] Re: P2P blocking and Mikrotik
The TT CPE allows me to set a pool speed that would be the same for all on
one pipe, but if I want to set a user different than others, then I have to
set each of those users.

We have multiple speed rates. Most of the outbound is set to 128K, then
download has 128K, 256K,512K,768K, 1Meg we have 2,3Meg in soon

Bob

I keep it set pretty low. Your users won't complain, because this is the
speed at which they are sharing, not the speed at which they download.
They'll still "get" at high speed, they'll just give a lot slower.

I think I have my limit set to 100kbps total (not per user).

I have been looking to this also.

What would be a good outbound speed that most users would not complain
about?

1K/sec seems to be way to low.

Thanks
Bob

Erik,

You may want to look at just limiting the outgoing P2P traffic. That way
you're actually helping your customers get better service while not limiting
them in the things they want to do.

There are 5 competitors in our area. We are now restricting all P2P
traffic to 512k. You can still download but not too fast. We have 12mb/s
of total bandwidth, 512 is not too big a chunk.

I'm not sure how you can do this for long and get away with it. My
customers wouldn't stand for it long. You must not have much other
competion in your area. If I did this all of my customers would run for
the DSL and cable in the area.

Last week I installed a Mikrotik 2.8beta box configured as a bridge
after the router. We are blocking P2P file sharing and the results have
been very entertaining. People will not actually call up and tell you
that Kazaa is not working. It is the "Internet" has stopped working...
Or I cannot get to the sites that I need.

We have had one customer cancel... Traffic during the daytime has
remained the same essentially, but evening and weekend traffic is 25-30%
lower.
