[isp-wireless] RE: P2P blocking and Mikrotik
The 10% skew you talk about seems like a reasonable amount. The problem only
becomes an issue when the vast percentage of your clients leave their
computers on all the time and don't take the time to learn about what their
computers are actually doing. Hell, we had to shut off 7 customers when
their computers got infected with the last worm after we walked them over
the phone on how to patch against it. They couldn't have been bothered to
wait the 10 minutes for the download and install to finish.

We work with a lot of students. Students like free stuff. If you can
download it, they will. Ask them what they have installed on their computers
and they give you a blank stare. Tell them that their KaZaA is running, they
say they shut it off when they are done. Point out that it is in fact still
running, they don't believe you even when they can see it themselves. I'm
not saying this is true for every student or every customer of ours, it is
just a blanket statement that unfortunately appears very accurate. It's
something that may change over time but that has a serious impact
present-day.

This type of solution may not be ideal for you and your customers. I'm not
saying that I totally agree with having to implement it myself either. It's
just that when you step back from the problem and notice a single major
cause, you do your best to reduce it's effect. Once P2P and similar
applications begin to behave properly and not try every trick in the bag to
bypass the management of them, I would gladly allow them back unrestricted.
Until that time, it is an uphill battle to stay one step in front of the
game.

Mike

| Are you using 11b for the last mile?? I find that our out is about
balanced
| with
| our in(more in during the day, more out during the night) with a overall
| 10% skew.
| We charge a user for the BW and explain that if they share, they pay. We
also
| explain we will give there name if a correctly legal request come's to us.
Most
| get the idea and are responsible. We explain that our services are like
| water, you
| pay for XX/mo and pay for over use. Everyone we sit down with and have a
good
| talk with treats the connection far better then the ones we just install
| and walk
| away from. Maybe its a function of size vs time spent with customer
type???
| We are small even by wISP standards, even tho we cover more then our
| competitor.
