Sadly, they're mostly vaporware.
http://www.open-xchange.org/ open source Exchange Server replacement, commercial version and support available, and I plan on trying it soon. :)

Haven't tried it yet, so can't vouch for its quality.

Written primarily in Java but has a couple pieces-parts written in C, according to the website.

One of the commercially-available pieces-parts is an Outlook plugin called OXlook, IIRC.
