Russ, you would be proved correct if it turns out that public companies are overreporting subscriber numbers. Folks, part of the difference numbers is about customers vs. subscribers. You get paid per household, not per end user, so it's the household numbers that I use when I put together these numbers (and it's time to start updating them all again -- it takes some time to go through all the numbers -- expect an update at the end of this month). For more on customers vs. subscribers, see: http://isp-planet.com/letters/2004/subscribers_customers.html _____________________________ Alex Goldman Managing Editor, ISP-Planet www.isp-planet.com JupiterWeb, a division of Jupitermedia Corporation P.S. WAS: ISP Solutions Hard for me to believe a number north of 55 million. I know, there are many stats out there that say more, but knowing the subscriber quantities of the top 20 retail ISPs, it's hard to come up with anything close to 70 million. If you look at the subscriber quantities of the companies in the lower portion of the top 20, you'll see numbers like 70,000 for their subscriber counts. Let's take a look at the logic: There are about 43 million dial-up subscribers on the list of top 20 retail ISPs. The last ones on the list have less than 70,000 subscribers. Knowing there are less than 2,000 operating ISPs in the USA (our lists compiled and maintained over the last 9 years), the stated numbers from Jupiter would suggest that small ISPs have an average about 13,500 subscribers each (assuming there are 70m dial-up subscribers out there). That does not make sense. How many on this list are north of 5,000 paying dial-up subscribers? I would venture to say that it's not the majority. Please know that I am not saying that 5,000 is not a great number to have, or even less. I'm just saying it's hard to find hundreds of ISPs that have that many subscribers out there. Also, knowing the wholesale industry, and approximate numbers for our competitors, it supports numbers in the 55 million range. And, Jupiter's report contains DSL and Cable users, it's not only Dial-up. I'm no statistician, just someone who's been in the industry for 10 years with a little insight.
