Ed,

You are SOOOOOO wrong.

I online network with about 200 small businesses here
in Tampa. In an informal survey, most had not even
heard of the independent ISPs, but those that did went
with Cable most of the time, based on fastest speed
with the best reliability and a low price.

Every day a client ISP will call and tell me that the
ILEC or cable has stolen a long time client. "He's
been with me 5 years, but Bell has offered him DSL for
$20." Or Cox just lit the neighborhood for $19.95.

BellSouth offers dial-up for $4.99. What value-add
would keep someone at $19.95?

People shop at Wal-Mart to the tune of several billion
dollars. People shop there in droves, putting small
businesses under weekly.

Another item that came from the survey was that the
telecom implosion from 2000-01 has negatively impacted
the remaining independent companies in telecom
including ISPs. After companies went from Bluestar to
Rhythms to ???, they think it is safer to go with the
ILEC or Cable. And now it is eminently cheaper, too.
The Norvergence Ponzi scheme didn't help. (And neither
will the UNE-P rate hikes coming soon to a town near
you).

That my dime's worth.

Anyone looking to read the survey responses can email
me for them.

Regards,

Peter
