  That's the usual method.  I have seen exceptions.  For example, a
point-to-point link doesn't really have a subnet mask.  You can also add an
explicit route on a hardware interface, but that's really uncommon.  The
only time I've seen that done "in the real world" is on the StarBand
satellite network (which is almost not a real IP network anyway).
