[isp-linux] netmask - gateway

Does the gateway address have to fit in the netmask
example
server IP 1.2.3.129
metmask 255.255.255.128
gateway 1.2.2.1

Shouldn't the gateway be something like 1.2.3.254 in the above example.
It has to be on the subnet, correct?
