I do not know if its a SQL statement that they use to query Oracle (I agree with you there, but I can find out. I know their lead dBA quite well). I worked for them for two years before I got too tired of California and came back to texas. They do use, however, a HIGHLY optimized query into the database for non-cached answers, and it is the slowest part of their system, but they drive their system to ensure that 90%+ of the answers are actually coming out of cache and not from the database backend. But I now they would spend days optimizing query calls to ensure the fastest database answers they could.
