FWIW, there does appear to be *something* happening, as several people have 
reported issues.

There don't seem to be major DNS issues, as we can reach all but one (l) of 
the root servers from here, and all of the gTLD parent servers as well, 
getting responses from all in under 400ms, under 150ms for almost all of 
them.  I'm guessing a major backbone is having problems.
