[isp-dns] RE: OpenSRS
Yes, it's a nightmare now. A couple of years ago it wasn't all that bad. Now,
they deny almost every transfer we try, without reason, at least once. A couple
of other registrars are at least as bad, with Joker leading the pack.

If you actually own the domains and are listed as Administrative contact, it
won't be quite as bad as walking all your customers through the process (even
though it's pretty simple) of acknowledging the transfers.

One thing that seems especially problematic, and which used to be easy, is when
you change ownership of a domain at the same time that you do a transfer. I'm
guessing this must put red flags on the transfer, because I can't get
Verisign/Network Solutions to let those go no matter what I do. Better to
transfer and then change ownership afterwards.

Something to keep in mind when using the OpernSRS system is that if you or a
customer own multiple domains, you'll want them all to be manageable under a
single OpenSRS profile (single login). But there's a catch - you can't just
create a profile, you must have at least one domain registered within it. Say
you had 100 domains to transfer for someone. If you do them all at once,
without using an established profile, you'll end up with 100 different user
profiles and logins. As a reseller, it's possible for you to "merge" the
profiles later, but it's usually easier to move one domain, and then do the rest
later. This can be a drawn-out process in itself, though, since it takes up to
a week for Verisign to OK or deny the transfer. If they deny it, you start all
over again.

Fun.

Jim
