I agree. We're running Squid in a MikroTik server
transparently for all users, and I have nothing but good
to say about it. We basically turned it on, and we forgot
about it. Before that, we were running a StarOS machine,
again with it's flavour of Squid, and again, had 100%
good results with it. It simple makes things faster, and
it simply saves us bandwidth. The only thing we are
wanting to change now, and the only reason we'd go
away from MikroTik or StarOS is the ability to resample
and compress graphics to make our bandwidth limited
dialup users more happy. IMHO, squid caching, for us,
has been zero headache... :-)

Blaine,

You mention "the headaches of caching". I would like to open this topic
further to you and to the rest of list.. Besides things like dynamic
and encrypted content, uneducated server admins (to set caching
controls) and maybe cheap BW (at least for US) what other "headaches"
make caching "not worth it"?

IMO, if you're limited by downstream BW then compression can help. If
you're limited by upstream BW then caching can help.

BTW, we run a global forward proxy cache infrastructure for large
corporate user base and see fairly good BW savings/response time
benefits.

I haven't seen any mention of free, open-source software yet so I
thought I
would mention RabbIT Web Proxy. It was created in Java and I have run
it
as a production server on *NIX and Windows boxen. Free, open-source,
cross
platform and overall pretty clean. The link for it is:

http://www.khelekore.org/rabbit/

I decided early in the process that the headaches of caching were not
worth
it. Since there was more than enough available upstream bandwidth, I
turned off the caching engine and just used the compression engine.
Grabs
a new copy of a site with every query and sends back a compressed
version
to the client. Beautiful.
