[isp-bgp] OT slightly... Cisco 871 issues with VPN's and PPTP

Please excuse this OT post, but there are many technical people on this list that seem to have more of a clue than something like ISP- tech and may have an idea of what is going on here.

We've got a Cisco 871 router in use behind a Cisco 2800 which is providing a managed connect from ATT for a customer of ours. The 871 is in use, because ATT "managed" service means, we do nothing without $500 a pop payments..

That said, we needed to be able to NAT the customers VLAN/network both public and private IP's. After setting this up, users complained that VPN's (cisco based VPN clients) ceased to function. Well, actually they would connect, but could only hold a connection for around 30-40 seconds.

After a long trouble shooting phase we found that Cisco Express Forwarding was the culprit. Turning it off fixed the VPN issues, and we were able to maintain stable VPN connections using the Cisco VPN Client.

However, we have issues that still exist with users using the Windows VPN client, ie., those using PPTP, instead of a an IPSEC tunnel, which does work after turning off CEF.

Is anyone aware of any issues with a Cisco 871 doing NAT having problems with VPN/PPTP connections? Is there a bug in the IOS we are not aware of? I am completely lost.

Cisco IOS Software, C870 Software (C870-ADVIPSERVICESK9-M), Version 12.4(4)T7, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

I have a sh run of the current config if someone has any ideas and or would like to see it.

Thank you for any help you can provide me.

Regards,
Bob Costas
