In OSPF we use 1sec dead internally unless we have a specific issue. We have an 6 second dead through our bridged firewall, as if it fails over there's a 3 second delay and a 2 second l2 port failover. I much prefer lowering the default values as most of our end users will complain about 15 seconds of down time, but they're clueless about 1 second of downtime. Agreed with everyone else about BGP. Default timers are TOO slow for today's requirements.
