Re: [isp-bgp] Tuning BGP timers - Best Practice
James,

There is a reason that made protocol developers create defaults for almost everything they developed.
Main reason is theirs (and ultimately yours) nightrest. You like it when your pager goes off at 03:00 AM ?

For OSPF it would be easy to tweak the default timers, since it is an IGP, and corporate guidelines can prescribe aberations from the standard. Nontheless, you can set a standard for your company on timers that they should adhere to, but what if the shareholders decide to 'aquire' or 'divest' a part of your AS ?

For BGP, which is mostly used as an EGP, it would be different. You will have to make deals (and keep track of those agreements in case you get 'outsourced') with your BGP peers if you want to change default timers. Aww, shoot, it can be in the same database as where you keep your MD5 encryption strings for that BGP session.

In short....If you like being busy, tweak the timers. If you have enough other things to do, leave them to default.

Hi there,

This is my first post to the group. We have been around for a while but
had always ran PI space though a 3rd party. As the business has grown we
have been assigned our own AS and /19 from RIPE.

I have worked on SME customer networks for a while so feel quite
comfortable with our IGP - OSPF. It is the EGP than has me diving for the
manual...

I have been playing with the various options within BGP and am not sure if
i should change the cisco default timers? I have read a few documents that
recommend 1sec advertisement-interval for internal peers and 5sec for
external... others advice changing the hold down timer...

IGP has the following timers.
!
 ip ospf hello-interval 3
 ip ospf dead-interval 15

We also plan for connecting some customers with HSRP. The customers 'LAN'
allocation will be Conditionally advertised on existence of their 'WAN'/30
prefix. Both of these prefixes will be carried via iBGP. Are there any
issues with the outbound (customers perspective) timers of HSRP and the
inbound timers of iBGP?

I would be grateful for any advice or know best practices anybody could
give me. All input is welcome and apologies if I am being a noob!

Kindest Regards
James
