On 24.03.2006 16:45 James Jun wrote Have a look at http://www.ripe.net/ripe/wg/eix/wishlist-v3.0.html to check what you should look at when chosing a switchIs this a layer-2 exchange or layer-3? In North America and Europe, most IXes are layer-2 where participants peer with each other and IX has no say in each participant's specific routing policy. However, often in other countries, we see "layer-3 IX", which the IX basically acts like a transit provider in essence. Simplest way to setup a layer-2 IX: 1. Install a switch (preferably a switch that supports 802.1Q and various SP-like features e.g. Cisco, but for low-budget starters, even a decent netgear would do for temporary start). 3. put together a couple PCs running Zebra or recycled cisco boxes for route-servers if you want people to do MLPA. Or run quagga (preferred) or OpenBGPD That's at least not true for Europe where almost all IXP run routeservers. From own experience (DE-CIX) I can say that customers like routeservers as they bring them up to speed very quick. Two sessions and you are done for the beginning. We also provide very fine control of their re-announcement via communities (Have a look at the remarks in AS6695).Most exchanges do not prefer MLPA peering (neither do I), and people often just get away with one server for 'route collection' and statistical purposes.
