On the topic of detecting DOS attacks early, we've been
running an Esphion NetDetect appliance.  The product is
quite young but it's been doing a great job of both
identifying attacks and producing good quality attack
signatures.  The software is getting better in leaps and
bounds with each release.  Might be something you want to
check out.
