I am looking for a router to connect a rack of servers to (initially) 2 transit providers. May eventually take part in some local public peering. We are quite small, so we will only be passing a couple of Mb traffic max, so we need something which will meet the requirements (eg BGP-4) and be fairly cheap. We're not looking for something which will cost loads and be hugely over spec for our needs. Any suggestions? Should we be looking for Cisco gear or something else? From what you've described, it sounds like a 3660 will work for you. They can be picked up pretty inexpensively on ebay and will take 256mb of memory which is key if you're going to be taking in the full BGP table. You could always step up to a 7200 series, but that would be overkill unless you project a lot of future growth. The lower 3600 series products probably won't work for you -- the 3640 will only take 128mb of memory and has a slower processor. Overall, the 3660 is an excellent box. It's got two built-in fast ethernet ports and six expansion slots. Another selling point (for me, anyway) was that it uses the same modules as the 2600 series, which meant fewer things to buy when upgrading from a 2600 to a 3660.. -Bill To unsubscribe via postal mail, please contact us at: Jupitermedia Corp.
