[isp-bgp] Traffic coming down "opposite" pipe
  • To: isp-bgp@isp-bgp.com
  • Subject: [isp-bgp] Traffic coming down "opposite" pipe
  • From: Rick Kunkel <kunkel@...>
  • Date: Wed, 4 Feb 2004 10:53:37 -0800 (Pacific Standard Time)

I have a couple of IP providers and have started running BGP with them. I
have a /22 from each of them.

We'll call the providers A and B, and the address space is 10.0.0.0/22 and
10.0.4.0/22, respectively.

I'm currently getting a 0.0.0.0/0 route from each of them, and I'm
currently announcing 10.0.0.0.22 and 10.0.4.0/22 to each of them.

If I go to a looking glass and do a trace or show ip bgp to the provider A
address space, it goes through provider B. if I trace or show ip bgp to
provider B's space, it goes through. This seems to be almost universal.

Is this because my providers are aggregating my announcment into a larger
announcement, so the route through the opposite provider always looks more
specific and hence more attractive?

Any other ideas?

If the aggregation is the suspected prob, can I correct this? Can I tell
my providers to stop aggregating my announcement into a larger one?

Thanks,

Rick Kunkel
