[isp-bgp] aspath regular expressions

Hi All,
I am new to this list and wanted to know about aspath regular expression 
implementation. I am working on reviving a chunk of code that implements the 
above. I tried to lookup on the web about any implementation ideas but wasnt 
successful. Can anyone tell me what are the common ways in which "aspath 
regular expressions" are implemented (the data structure / algorithm). Or 
some pointers on the web ?
How do gated /zebra do it.
Hope this is not a wrong kind of question for this list.
