It also depends on IOS version and feature set. Plain IP 12.0
doesn't require nearly as much memory as 12.2 { IP-Plus | Service
Provider }. Disabling soft updates also helps reduce memory
needs, although at a price.

I'm rather fond of the 2691. With a max of 256 MB RAM and better
forwarding performance than the 3620, I think they're a pretty
good deal.

Unless many interfaces are required, I'd take the 2691 over the
3640. The 3660 is fairly nice, but rather large.
Also: Cisco manufactures ATM DS3 NM cards. I'm not saying this
should sway one toward the 26xx/36xx over the 72xx, but it's
something to consider... some people recycle 26xx routers into
DSL or FR terminators (FR-to-ATM provided by loop owner) when
upgrading to bigger border routers.
