[isp-bgp] RE: Questions about a Cisco 6509
Jeff,
In order to perform routing functions with the 6509, you need to
purchase the MSFC daughtercard. There are MSFC and MSFC2 cards. You
can use either one with a Sup1A. I have heard conflicting statements
regarding whether or not you can upgrade a regular Sup1A to a Sup1A w/
MSFC in the field. One vendor tells me that you can do it, another
vendor says that Cisco has to install the card.
You will want to base your decision (MSFC or MSFC2) on whether you are
planning on doing a lot of QoS or filtering, because each of these cards
comes with a Policy Feature Card (PFC1 or PFC2) which allows you to
perform high-end advanced tasks like QoS and filtering.
The Supervisor card is just the switching engine for the 6509 and it can
only perform Layer 2 functions. For three BGP feeds, 256MB on the MSFC
will do you for now, but if it's not cost-prohibitive, I would go with
the 512MB.

Subject: [isp-bgp] Questions about a Cisco 6509
Hi all,
I have charged with updating our network architecture. We have decided
to go with Cisco as our router/switching.
My understanding so far of the 6500 is it is a switch until you add the
Supervisor card (WS-X6K-SUP1A-2GE). Will the WS-X6K-SUP1A-2GE card
does BGP itself, or do I need a daughter card of some sort?
Also, how much memory should I have for the 3 full BGP feeds? I have
read that Cisco recommends 128MB per BGP feed, but I have also heard
murmers that the 128 MB will soon be inadequate due to the global
routing size. So with 512MB, would there be enough memory left over to
service the router's requirements while holding the 3 BGP feeds?
The reason for the 6509 is we would be amalgamating our existing 2924's
into it, so the switching functions are required.
Here is the configuration that I have come up with from the Cisco
configurator. With my requirements above, will this suite my needs?
WS-CDC-2500W Catalyst 6000 2500W DC Power Supply
WS-CAC-2500W/2 Catalyst 6000 Second 2500W AC Power
SC6K-SCVK9-7.6.1 Catalyst 6000 Sup 1 Flash Image w/CV and SSH, Release
7.6.1 1
MEM-C6K-FLC24M Catalyst 6000 Supervisor PCMCIA Flash Mem Card, 24MB
Option
WS-X6K-SUP1A-2GE Catalyst 6000 Supervisor Engine1A, Enhanced QoS, 2GE
MEM-C6K-FLC24M Catalyst 6000 Supervisor PCMCIA Flash Mem Card, 24MB
Option
WS-X6348-RJ-45 Catalyst 6500 48-port 10/100, Upgradable to Voice, RJ-45
WS-X6348-RJ-45 Catalyst 6500 48-port 10/100, Upgradable to Voice, RJ-45
WS-X6348-RJ-45 Catalyst 6500 48-port 10/100, Upgradable to Voice, RJ-45
Thanks for all the help with this.
