Re: [isp-bandwidth] Om Malik supports throttling, gets flamed
There are many non-IP costs in running an ISP such as labor, energy of various forms, rent, etc.

If you're costs are going up you're shopping it the wrong way.

If anything it's seemed like a pretty steady decline in pricing and at higher service levels and better performing networks than I'd have expected. Maybe though everything relates back to 1995 pricing and it all seems dirt cheap.

I increased my broadband rates as well. They didn't go up 30%, but with some adjustments and policy, I predict we may get 25% more revenue.

That's a fair process to all, but confusing to the customer.

What's confusing about it? This is the way every other UTILITY is billed, from sewer/water, gas, electric, etc... You pay a flat rate for the privilege of having the service, call it a "minimum use charge", then you pay X for usage.

Our industry really needs to move to this type of model if we want to continue to make a profit. Again, every other utility is charged with a flat rate for having the service, then X for anything above that. Even cable/satellite. You pay one price for the service, then extra for additional services. You pay whether you watch it or not, and you pay MORE for EXTRA TV's... We should be charging a fee for each computer in use as well.

Someone needs to start the ball rolling in this direction...

Back to the buffet, when it comes to internet you buy one plate and the whole family eats. We should be charging per plate like everyone else.

ATM, we are raising our broadband rates 30% and calling it a fuel surcharge. Our costs have gone up yet our prices in the industry keep going down. Again, this does not happen with other utilities. My 800 # services have risen 60% for the minimum charge under the guise of a fuel surcharge.

We should all be doing the same.

Bob Costas
