I gather you have updated your Linux to MD5 rather than crypt.  They will 
work happily together and change as users change their passwords.

Unless you limit to MD5 only.  Which isn't a "bright" way.

No, you can't convert a crypt password to something sensible then to 
MD5.  See Ross' post about capturing passwords, but the reality is - it's 
time consuming.
